Prince William and Gordon Brown are teaming up to shed light on the issue of homelessness and showcase that it can be prevented. The former Labour Prime Minister’s charity is working with the Prince of Wales to equip homes with essential items like cookers, fridges, washing machines, and utensils.
Brown expressed that their collaboration, supported by major UK retailers, aims to combat homelessness by transforming houses into homes for families in need. He praised Prince William for following in his mother Princess Diana’s footsteps, who advocated for various causes like banning landmines and addressing HIV and AIDS stigma.
The joint initiative, named Homewards, led by Prince William and Brown, will strive to make homelessness rare, brief, and non-recurring over a five-year period. Brown’s Multibank program, established in Fife in 2021, focuses on alleviating poverty by redistributing surplus goods such as bedding and toys to those in need.
Under the partnership, Multibank will furnish 250 homes provided by Homeward across six regions with the support of major companies including B&Q, Bosch Home Appliances, DFS Group, and IKEA. This effort builds on a successful pilot project in Aberdeen that demonstrated the positive impact of furnishing properties on tenancy sustainability.
Brown emphasized the importance of providing basic household items like beds, bedding, and toiletries to families facing housing insecurity. Properly furnished homes not only instill pride but also contribute to preventing further instances of homelessness.
In a documentary last year, Prince William reflected on his charitable work, inspired by his mother’s advocacy, particularly in addressing homelessness. Despite his privileged background, he emphasized the universal right to a safe and stable home and his commitment to using his platform to make a positive impact.
Hazel Detsiny, executive director of homelessness at The Royal Foundation, commended the collaboration between Homewards and industry leaders in tackling societal challenges. The partnership seeks to address root causes of homelessness, including housing, financial stability, and employment, by engaging businesses across various sectors.
