Recent resignations of BBC director general Tim Davie and News chief executive Deborah Turness followed allegations from The Telegraph that the BBC manipulated footage of Trump’s speech to suggest his involvement in the Capitol Hill riots of January 2021, sparking accusations of bias against the BBC.
Trump celebrated the resignations, hailing the report as a revelation of “corrupt journalists.” Furthermore, reports emerged that the US President has threatened the BBC with legal action.
The Prime Minister’s spokesperson affirmed that the BBC is not corrupt but plays a crucial role in combating disinformation, emphasizing the importance of the BBC swiftly correcting mistakes to maintain trust.
Regarding allegations of institutional bias, the spokesperson stated that it is crucial for the BBC to act promptly to rectify errors and maintain trust, highlighting accountability as essential for any public broadcaster.
The spokesperson refrained from commenting on the potential inclusion of the BBC license fee in a broader review of the broadcaster’s charter.
In recent days, the BBC faced backlash over a Panorama documentary that allegedly misrepresented Trump’s speech before the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot.
During the speech in Washington DC, Trump urged his supporters to protest the certification of the 2020 Presidential Election results, although there is no credible evidence of election fraud.
The White House condemned the BBC for editing Trump’s speech, calling it “100% fake news” and a “propaganda machine.”
Chair of the BBC Samir Shah addressed MPs, acknowledging concerns over the Panorama episode and admitting errors in editing Trump’s speech, apologizing for the misleading impression it created.
