Poland and fellow NATO allies swiftly launched fighter jets in response to a massive attack by Vladimir Putin, who unleashed more than 650 drones and 50 missiles on Ukraine overnight, causing extensive damage and widespread power outages across the country.
Poland’s military immediately deployed fighter jets and an early warning aircraft in response to the heightened state of alert for Warsaw’s air defense and radar systems. The Russian strikes on Ukrainian targets resulted in casualties, including three fatalities, including a young girl, and injuries to 17 people, including six children, according to Kyiv authorities.
The attacks led to significant power outages, with Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko denouncing the deliberate attempt to plunge the country into darkness and disrupt heating facilities before the winter season.
Near Ukraine’s border with Poland, Western communities also faced attacks, prompting Polish warplanes to take defensive measures in case any missiles strayed into their territory.
In a statement, Poland’s operational command confirmed the activation of air forces from Poland and its allies in response to the Russian assault on Ukrainian soil. The city of Zaporizhzhia faced relentless attacks, with multiple drones and missiles targeting residential areas, resulting in significant damage. President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed the impact of the strikes, acknowledging the losses despite successful interceptions.
Other regions, such as Dnipro, witnessed ballistic missile strikes, and even areas far from the front line were hit, indicating the extent of the Russian offensive.
In Ivano-Frankivsk, continuous explosions were reported as cruise missiles struck the region, leading to power outages and disruptions in energy supply. The Burshtyn Thermal Power Plant, a critical junction connecting Ukraine’s power grid with neighboring countries, was targeted but is expected to be restored.
Further attacks in Mykolaiv and Lviv regions caused additional power outages and disruptions to essential services, with authorities making plans for alternative heating and water supply solutions.
