“Government Confiscates Nearly 60,000 Knives, Aims to Halve Crime”

Must Read

Nearly 60,000 knives have been confiscated from public circulation since July of the past year, according to the most recent data available. Advocates have hailed this as a significant milestone, emphasizing the government’s commitment to reducing knife-related crimes by half over the next ten years.

Information released by the Home Office indicates that 7,512 knives and weaponry were handed in during a summer amnesty program. In addition, 47,795 zombie-style knives and machetes were voluntarily surrendered last year. The Border Force has intercepted 3,334 knives, while 618 blades were seized through operations under the County Lines Programme.

Sandra Campbell, the leader of the Word 4 Weapons campaign group, stated, “Each weapon turned in represents a potential tragedy averted within our communities.” Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood emphasized the government’s determination to combat knife crime, underscoring the ongoing efforts to eliminate these dangerous weapons from the streets.

Recent crime statistics reveal a 5% decrease in knife-related offenses over the past year, with 51,527 incidents reported in the twelve months leading up to June, compared to 54,215 the previous year. During the same period, there was an 18% reduction in fatal knife attacks. The Labour party has pledged to halve such crimes within a decade.

Patrick Green, the CEO of the Ben Kinsella Trust, established in memory of 16-year-old Ben who was fatally stabbed in 2008, commended the recent progress. He applauded the removal of significant quantities of large and hazardous weapons, particularly ninja swords, as a crucial step toward enhancing street safety and safeguarding young lives from senseless violence.

Campaigner Faron Paul, founder of FazAmnesty, an organization focused on removing weapons from the streets through knife bins and mentorship programs, highlighted the successful collaboration with local authorities and charities in eliminating thousands of weapons. He expressed confidence in achieving a 50% reduction in knife crime over the next decade.

The introduction of Ronan’s Law, a ban on ninja swords in memory of murdered 16-year-old Ronan Kanda, became effective on August 1. Prior to its implementation, surrender bins and a mobile ban were initiated in various locations including London, Manchester, and the West Midlands. Ronan’s mother, Pooja, expressed gratitude for the government’s proactive measures in honor of her son and the safety of all young individuals.

The ongoing Crime and Policing Bill, currently progressing through Parliament, will enhance age verification protocols for online knife sales and deliveries. Additionally, tech industry leaders will face stringent penalties for hosting illegal knife-related content online.
