“Elderly Couple Found Dead After Thanksgiving Trip”

Must Read

A tragic incident unfolded following a family Thanksgiving gathering as an elderly couple, Linda and Gary Lightfoot, were discovered deceased after becoming disoriented on their way home. Linda, 81, and Gary, 82, went missing after departing from Lubbock, Texas, where they resided, and were later found on a ranch in New Mexico, five days after they left the celebration in Quay County.

The couple, who had driven the route from Panhandle, Texas, multiple times before, seemingly lost their way this time, leading to their untimely passing. The Quay County Sheriff’s Office confirmed the discovery of the bodies, stating that both individuals were found deceased at the scene. The autopsy reports to determine the cause and manner of their deaths are expected to be finalized within approximately three months.

It typically takes about two-and-a-half hours to travel from Panhandle to Quay County, although this route was not the most direct path to their home in Lubbock. It is believed that Linda and Gary may have mistakenly taken Route 40 west through Amarillo in their final moments.

The Lightfoot family described Linda and Gary as compassionate individuals who leave behind a legacy of love and dedication. Gary, a military veteran, had served in law enforcement roles, including as the Littlefield Police Chief from 1993 to 2003, while also being skilled in woodworking. Linda, who had worked in the oil and gas industry and banking in Abilene, Texas, was known for her generosity and fondness for celebrating special occasions.

The couple’s devotion to their community and church was highlighted by their loved ones, who expressed gratitude for the support from authorities during the search efforts. Linda and Gary are survived by their son, Gregg, Linda’s sister Barbara, Barbara’s husband Waylon, as well as nieces and nephews. The family stressed the importance of preparedness while traveling, no matter the distance, as a crucial safety measure for future journeys.
