A tragic incident involving fireworks resulted in the death of a 17-year-old boy in the Vermont Knolls neighborhood of southern Los Angeles. The teenager was playing with fireworks in his backyard when a loud explosion was heard by neighbors on Wednesday night around 9:30 pm. The use of fireworks is prohibited in the city of Los Angeles, and it is suspected that the fireworks involved may have been homemade.
After receiving alerts, the Los Angeles Police Department officers rushed to the scene on W. 84th Street west of the 110 Freeway. They found the teenager engulfed in flames and immediately transported him to the hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
Investigations suggest that the fireworks the teenager was handling could have been homemade, a fact unbeknownst to his family. Witnesses reported hearing an explosion akin to a bomb, prompting the LAPD Bomb Squad to join the investigation.
The police revealed that the teenager was handling pyrotechnic materials when they unexpectedly detonated. Subsequent searches led to the discovery of a significant amount of illegal pyrotechnic devices, which were safely secured with no further public safety risks.
In response to the tragic incident, the City of Los Angeles has enforced a complete ban on fireworks, emphasizing that their possession, sale, or use is unlawful. Community activist Najee Ali expressed concern over the accessibility of illegal fireworks to minors, highlighting the unnecessary loss of the young teenager’s life.
While fireworks-related deaths in the U.S. are relatively low annually, recent statistics indicate a consistent number of fatalities due to misuse or malfunctions. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission data underscores that although injuries from fireworks are common, fatalities remain a significant hazard.
