“Asda Faces 7% Sales Decline Amid Tough Competition”

Must Read

Asda, the major supermarket chain, faced a significant setback with a 7% decline in sales. The latest data from industry experts NielsenIQ (NIQ) indicated a decrease in Asda’s market share from 12.2% to 10.9% over the past three months.

Following the acquisition by billionaire brothers Mohsin and Zuber Issa along with TDR Capital in 2021, Asda has been striving to overcome challenges. The grocer, now under TDR’s control, appointed veteran executive chairman Allan Leighton last year to drive its resurgence, leveraging his successful turnaround efforts in the 1990s.

Despite unveiling extensive price reduction plans in March, including the largest cuts in 25 years, Asda experienced a sharp sales drop. The company aimed to position itself 5% to 10% cheaper than its main competitors like Tesco, Sainsbury’s, and Morrisons by intensifying its discount strategies.

Contrary to Asda’s decline, Tesco and Sainsbury’s witnessed sales growth of 4.5% and 5.2% respectively during the same period. Aldi also emerged as a formidable competitor with a 10.3% market share, putting pressure on Asda.

In response to the challenges, an Asda spokesperson expressed confidence in their ongoing strategy to enhance customer experience and affordability. The company highlighted improvements in availability both online and in-store, as well as a renewed focus on providing value to customers through competitive pricing.

As part of its efforts to attract more customers, Asda launched a festive advertising campaign featuring The Grinch. Meanwhile, NielsenIQ projected a significant spending of £20 billion on Christmas groceries this year, reaching a peak of £5.7 billion in the upcoming week.

Mike Watkins, the head of retailer and business insight at NielsenIQ, noted a trend of cautious spending among shoppers this holiday season, emphasizing the importance of smart shopping choices to balance savings with indulgences for the family in December.
