A heartbreaking tale unfolded as two orphaned siblings, initially hopeful of finding a loving home, were subjected to unspeakable torment by a couple intending to adopt them, according to court proceedings.
The older child, a 12-year-old known as LL, endured agonizing final moments trapped in a locked basement, screaming and vomiting in pain while the prospective adoptive parents allegedly callously observed his suffering. The boy, who sought care and protection, tragically met his demise in what is described as a horrific case of neglect and abuse.
Becky Hamber and Brandy Cooney have entered not guilty pleas to charges including first-degree murder, confinement, assault with a weapon, and neglecting LL’s younger brother, JL. Testifying during the trial, JL recounted the harrowing ordeal he and his brother faced while under the care of the accused couple.
Prosecutors allege that the couple mistreated the children through neglect, fabricating behavioral issues to service providers. Conversely, the defense argues that Hamber and Cooney did their best to care for the brothers, who had special needs, with minimal external support.
LL was discovered by paramedics in a dire state – emaciated, unresponsive, and inexplicably wet, confined in the couple’s Toronto home basement. Despite efforts to save him, LL succumbed to his conditions on December 21, 2022, appearing severely malnourished, resembling a much younger child.
According to reports, LL had been distressed, crying, and vomiting while trapped in the basement for an extended period, desperately attempting to escape his dire circumstances.
Faisel Mohdi, a social worker, testified that LL slept on a filthy cot regularly soaked in vomit. Allegedly, the conditions were ignored, as Cooney’s father mentioned that cleaning the area was unnecessary due to the laundry workload.
Video footage from the day of LL’s death showed the boy alone for most of the time, struggling with eating issues, as per the couple’s account to Mohdi. They claimed LL’s low weight was due to regurgitating and re-consuming food, despite evidence suggesting otherwise.
The defenseless child’s suffering continued with the couple’s apparent neglect and mistreatment, as depicted in videos of LL being coerced to perform demeaning actions, eventually leading to his tragic demise.
Despite attempts to save LL by the accused, his condition deteriorated rapidly, raising questions about the circumstances surrounding his death, including the puzzling presence of a wetsuit and the exact cause of his demise.
JL, LL’s younger brother, recounted years of torment and abuse at the hands of the couple, highlighting a pattern of cruelty and neglect that the siblings endured under the guise of adoption.
The ongoing trial is set to continue, with further proceedings expected until December as the court seeks justice for the tragic fate of LL and the horrific ordeal faced by the two orphaned siblings.
