Shaun Murphy Slams Matchroom Over Scheduling Fiasco

Must Read

Shaun Murphy expressed strong dissatisfaction towards Matchroom regarding the scheduling of Monday’s Champion of Champions competition. The frustration stemmed from his recent participation in China’s International Championship quarter-finals just four days before.

In a swift turn of events, Murphy found himself in the opening match of the tournament, facing a tough 4-1 defeat against Lei Peifan. The 43-year-old was taken aback when he discovered his Monday fixture while returning from Nanjing, learning about the event’s order on the same morning.

In a candid interview with ITV4 after his loss, Murphy criticized Matchroom for what he perceived as disrespectful treatment. He highlighted the lack of communication and the last-minute revelation of his match schedule, contrasting it with the organization’s past professionalism.

Murphy’s frustration was further fueled by the fact that other players, like Mark Williams, Mark Allen, and Alfie Burden, who did not participate in the recent International Championship, were not scheduled to play on the tournament’s opening day like him.

Matchroom responded to Murphy’s grievances by acknowledging his frustrations and emphasizing their commitment to player priorities and fairness in group allocations based on seeding. They also acknowledged the challenges in scheduling and expressed a commitment to improvement for future events.

The Champion of Champions event saw World No. 1 Judd Trump secure a 4-1 victory over Bai Yulu on the opening day, setting up a match against Lei later in the evening. Tuesday’s lineup included matches between Kyren Wilson and Jack Lisowski, Mark Allen and Ziao Xintong, Mark Williams and Alfie Burden, Mark Selby and Stephen Maguire, Neil Robertson and Tom Ford, and John Higgins against Xiao Guodong.
