A young man, aged 26, initially sought treatment for symptoms of a urinary tract infection but later discovered a more severe underlying condition. Chandler Heatley visited the emergency department in April after noticing blood in his urine. He received antibiotics and advice to consume cranberry juice for the UTI.
Subsequently, within a month, he began experiencing persistent lower abdominal pain and frequent urination. In May, his return to the emergency department was prompted by intense pain on his left side, hindering his ability to sleep. A low-contrast CT scan suggested the presence of a bladder stone.
While pain relief was provided and the possibility of kidney stones was considered, a high-contrast CT scan unveiled a sizable tumor on Chandler’s prostate gland, likely cancerous, along with nodules in his left lung. Doctors warned of the tumor’s rapid growth and initiated chemotherapy at Freeman Hospital in Newcastle in June prior to receiving full pathology results.
Following a biopsy confirming prostate sarcoma with metastases to his lungs, liver, and bones, medical professionals deemed the cancer incurable. Chandler expressed his shock and emphasized the importance of early detection through comprehensive imaging tests.
His mother, Lisa, noted his significant weight loss and highlighted the rarity of the Dicer-1 mutation in combination with his age. Despite numerous lung tumors, one measuring 8cm, Chandler has undergone multiple chemotherapy cycles. The medical team is evaluating further treatment options, including radiotherapy, alternative chemotherapy, or surgery.
Optimistic about his response to chemotherapy, Chandler remains hopeful for a potential cure through clinical trials. He emphasized the importance of exploring all available avenues for treatment and expressed a desire to participate in any trial offering a chance at tumor eradication.
