A man, Christopher Scholtes, has been accused of murder in connection with the tragic death of his two-year-old daughter. The incident occurred when the child was left unattended in a hot car for almost three-and-a-half hours during a scorching summer day, reaching temperatures up to 43C outside and potentially 81C inside the vehicle.
Allegedly, Scholtes was engrossed in video games and consuming alcohol while his daughter, secured in her car seat, succumbed to heat exposure on July 9, 2024. Prosecutors claim that he was also viewing inappropriate content during this time, although the court has disallowed the mention of this evidence during the trial.
Judge Kimberly Ortiz has ruled out any testimony related to Scholtes’ alleged online activity before the discovery of his daughter’s body. Nevertheless, the prosecution can present evidence of previous incidents where Scholtes’ children were left alone in a car, despite prior warnings from law enforcement.
Initially, Scholtes claimed he left the child in the car with the air conditioning running for a brief period, but records indicate he was preoccupied with video games for an extended duration until his wife found the unconscious child upon returning home. Tragically, the young girl was pronounced dead at the hospital where her mother worked.
Further investigation revealed that Scholtes’ surviving daughters had also been left unattended in a car on previous occasions. Despite facing a severe murder charge, Scholtes’ wife has supported him, attributing the incident to a “big mistake.” He declined a plea deal and now faces a potential life sentence if convicted at trial.
