World Password Day, observed on May 7, serves as a timely reminder for individuals to review and strengthen their account security measures. Many people fall into the habit of using easily crackable passwords across various online platforms, leaving their personal information vulnerable to cyber threats.
Research conducted by Hybrid Cloud Services revealed that a significant number of individuals, approximately one in eight, use the same password for all their accounts, a risky practice. Additionally, around 36% of users employ only one to three passwords for all their online activities, which poses a security risk.
Only a mere 19% of individuals opt for a different password for each account, considered a more secure approach to online safety. Despite repeated warnings from cybersecurity experts, common and weak passwords like “admin,” “123456,” and “password” are still widely used in the UK, leaving accounts susceptible to hacking attempts.
To enhance account security, experts recommend implementing two-factor authentication whenever feasible. This additional layer of security necessitates a second verification step before granting access, fortifying the protection of online accounts. It is also advisable to create longer and more complex passwords, as well as utilizing a password manager to securely manage credentials and reduce the likelihood of password reuse.
Matt Cooke, EMEA Cybersecurity Strategist at Proofpoint, emphasized the importance of avoiding easily guessable passwords and reusing credentials across multiple accounts. He recommended updating personal passwords biannually and business passwords quarterly to enhance overall security practices.
Improving password security can be achieved through simple steps such as using passphrases instead of basic passwords, generating unique passwords for each account with the help of password tools or managers, and utilizing a password manager to securely store and manage login details across all accounts. These practices can significantly bolster online security and protect personal information from cyber threats.
