President Donald Trump made a significant announcement on Wednesday evening, revealing his decision to bestow the Presidential Medal of Freedom upon retired Major League Baseball pitcher Roger Clemens. Trump hailed Clemens, a seven-time Cy Young Award winner, as potentially the greatest pitcher in baseball history.
Speaking at a rally in San Antonio, Trump reiterated his support for Clemens’ induction into the Baseball Hall of Fame. Despite a decorated 24-year career with the Boston Red Sox, Toronto Blue Jays, New York Yankees, and Houston Astros, Clemens has faced Hall of Fame exclusion due to suspicions of steroid use.
During his address, Trump emphasized the prestigious nature of the Presidential Medal of Freedom, highlighting it as one of the highest honors an individual can receive. He expressed confidence that Clemens would eventually secure his place in the Hall of Fame, praising him as one of the finest athletes and pitchers ever to grace the sport.
Trump’s administration has previously honored various athletes with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, including Tiger Woods, Roger Staubach, Mariano Rivera, and Lou Holtz. Posthumous awards have also been granted to Elvis Presley and Rush Limbaugh.
The unexpected announcement came towards the end of Trump’s lengthy speech, where Clemens, present at the event, was called on stage by the president. Overwhelmed by the recognition, Clemens remarked, “Well, I’m stunned.”
Clemens, a native of Houston, expressed gratitude for the honor being bestowed in Texas and lauded Trump as a true winner. Despite facing Hall of Fame rejection alongside other players linked to performance-enhancing drugs like Barry Bonds, Clemens remains hopeful for future opportunities.
Trump’s advocacy for baseball legends extends to figures like Pete Rose, for whom he issued a posthumous pardon, leading to the lifting of Major League Baseball’s ban on the all-time hits leader. The president has also championed Rose’s induction into the Hall of Fame, a campaign that has yet to materialize.
