Dylan Cease, the talented pitcher for the Toronto Blue Jays, may have been more inclined towards theatre than art during his high school days. However, his artistic flair has now earned him a spot at the prestigious Art Gallery of Ontario.
Recently, the AGO shop unveiled a special retail collection showcasing Cease’s artwork, featuring a painting inspired by Toronto prominently displayed in Walker Court. The collection comprises a range of items such as prints, postcards, T-shirts, sweatshirts, and totes, with all proceeds dedicated to supporting the AGO’s charitable endeavors.
Reflecting on his artistic journey, Cease humorously remarked that despite not studying art in high school and being more involved in theatre, his teachers might have had their share of critiques about his work. He expressed his surprise at the reception, especially when addressing a group of kids from summer camps about art.
At the Art Gallery of Ontario, a long line of fans, both young and old, eagerly awaited the chance to meet Dylan Cease and view his artwork. Overwhelmed by the turnout and media attention, Cease admitted to feeling the magnitude of the moment, which was beyond his expectations.
Having only started painting in 2022, Cease has already contributed artwork for a charity associated with his former teammate, Michael King. Notably, his Toronto piece now adorns the office of Blue Jays manager, John Schneider.
When asked why he doesn’t paint images of himself pitching, Cease playfully responded that his artistic skills are more suited to abstract creations due to their limitations. Inspired by the prospect of spending a significant part of his future in Toronto after signing a lucrative contract, Cease has immersed himself in learning about Canadian culture, history, and politics.
While currently working with acrylics, Cease plans to venture into oil painting next, emphasizing the joy and therapeutic value art brings to his life as a contrast to the intensity of baseball. He views painting as a liberating and enjoyable activity that provides a balance to his life, regardless of where the finished pieces end up.
Overall, Cease’s artistic journey serves as a testament to his creative exploration and the profound impact of art in fostering personal wellbeing and fulfillment.
