The latest data released today reveals that the most economically disadvantaged area in England is situated within Nigel Farage’s Clacton constituency. Specifically, a neighborhood in Jaywick, Clacton-on-Sea, has been identified as having the highest level of deprivation out of over 33,750 small local areas across the country. This assessment was conducted by the Ministry of Housing, Communities & Local Government, which assessed various factors such as income, employment, education, health, crime, housing, and the overall local environment to determine the deprivation scores for each area.
These figures come at a time when the Reform UK party, led by Nigel Farage, has proposed strict measures, including discontinuing the personal independence payment (PIP) for individuals with anxiety disorders deemed non-serious. The party has also outlined plans for more frequent reassessments for eligible claimants, part of a broader strategy to overhaul the benefits system and potentially save billions of pounds annually by 2029.
The Indices of Multiple Deprivation (IMD) are considered the most comprehensive tool for identifying areas facing disadvantage and poverty in the country. The latest update of these figures takes into account the impact of the Covid pandemic on local communities. It is important to note that deprivation rates are calculated separately for Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland, with the data released today focusing solely on England. Within England, the IMD scores are calculated for small neighborhoods known as LSOAs, each with approximately 1,500 residents.
The area within Clacton with the lowest deprivation score, Tendring 018A, is located to the west of the town, characterized by detached bungalows in the Brooklands Estate. This area was previously identified as the most deprived part of the country in the 2019 rankings. Nigel Farage, who secured victory as the MP for Clacton in the recent General Election, has been a prominent figure in the area. Additionally, the top five most deprived areas in the country are all found in Blackpool, with Blackpool being identified as the most deprived local authority in England based on the average IMD scores of its neighborhoods.
