UK Government Organizes Jamaica Evacuation Flights

Must Read

The UK Government is arranging flights to assist British citizens in departing Jamaica following the devastation caused by Hurricane Melissa.

Authorities are organizing flights to evacuate British nationals as the death toll from the catastrophic natural disaster continues to climb. Jamaica has reported five fatalities, while Haiti has recorded at least 20 deaths due to flooding triggered by the powerful category five storm.

With wind speeds reaching 185mph, Hurricane Melissa stands as one of the strongest Atlantic hurricanes on record. The UK has pledged £2.5 million in emergency humanitarian aid to Jamaica. Keir Starmer described the destruction captured in footage as “truly shocking,” while the Prime Minister informed MPs that HMS Trent and specialized rapid deployment teams were strategically positioned in the region for assistance.

In the aftermath of the storm, people are stranded without power and facing infrastructure damage amidst the ongoing floods. Hurricane Melissa, now downgraded to a category one storm, is expected to bring additional strong winds and heavy rainfall.

Over 25,000 individuals sought refuge in shelters in Jamaica as the storm tore roofs off homes. Dana Morris Dixon, Jamaica’s education minister, reported that 77% of the island was without electricity.

Prime Minister Andrew Holness assured the public in a statement that the recovery process would take time but emphasized that the government was fully mobilized. Relief supplies are being readied, and efforts are underway to swiftly restore normalcy.

Describing the devastation in the southwest coastal community of Black River, Prime Minister Holness stated, “Black River is what you would describe as ground zero. The people are still coming to grips with the destruction.”

The power outages have hindered damage assessment due to a “total communication blackout” in some areas, as outlined by Richard Thompson, the acting director general of Jamaica’s Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management, during an interview with the Nationwide News Network radio station.
