Elderly Woman Dies After Cruise Ship Leaves Her on Island

Must Read

The daughter of a woman who tragically passed away on a tropical island following a cruise ship departure without her has expressed her profound sorrow. Suzanne Rees, aged 80, was found deceased on Lizard Island where she and fellow passengers disembarked from the Coral Adventurer during a 60-day luxury cruise. Despite being a solo traveler, Ms. Rees was left behind as the vessel set sail for its next destination. After a search, she was discovered dead in a remote area.

Reports indicate that Ms. Rees had gone for a hike on the island, where she fell and sustained severe injuries on a Saturday. An investigation is now in progress to determine why she wasn’t able to re-board the ship, including allegations of a lack of passenger count before departure.

Katherine Rees, the daughter of Ms. Rees, has endorsed the investigation, accusing Coral Expeditions of negligence. Speaking from Sydney, Australia, Katherine criticized the cruise company for their actions, stating that her mother was left behind after experiencing health issues during an organized excursion.

Katherine hopes that a coroner’s inquiry will shed light on whether the company’s actions could have prevented her mother’s death. The crew discovered Ms. Rees’ body the following day near a hiking trail, where she appeared to have fallen from a cliff or slope.

Authorities have confirmed that the death is being investigated as non-suspicious, with both a coroner and Coral Expeditions cooperating with official inquiries. The cruise company has expressed condolences to the Rees family and is providing support during this difficult period.

Investigations are ongoing to determine why Ms. Rees was not properly accounted for when passengers were boarding at Lizard Island. Additionally, the Australian Maritime Safety Authority and a workplace safety regulator are conducting their own investigations into the tragic incident.
