Must Read

NHL prospect Matthew Mayich, originally from Hamilton and a former player for the Ottawa 67’s in junior hockey, is currently hospitalized in Arizona due to an incident during off-ice training, as confirmed by the Ontario Hockey League. Mayich, aged 21, was drafted by the St. Louis Blues in the sixth round of the 2023 NHL draft.

According to his player record, Mayich participated in minor hockey with the Hamilton Huskies from 2016 to 2020 before joining the 67’s. Reports from the OHL indicate that he was admitted to the hospital while preparing for the upcoming 2026-27 season in Arizona on August 20.

The St. Louis Blues have expressed their support for Mayich’s recovery, with Doug Armstrong, the team’s president of hockey operations, stating that they are keeping Mayich in their thoughts and prayers as he receives medical care in Arizona. The organization also extends its deepest support to his family, friends, and teammates during this challenging time.

Meanwhile, Arizona State University, where Mayich is listed as a player, confirmed that a student from the hockey team collapsed during an outdoor morning exercise session and is currently hospitalized. The university is conducting a review of the circumstances surrounding the incident but has not disclosed the student’s identity.

OHL commissioner Bryan Crawford echoed similar sentiments, expressing the league’s support for Mayich, his parents, and the entire Mayich family. The Hamilton Steel Hockey Club, formerly known as the Huskies, previously shared congratulatory messages for Mayich when he joined the 67’s in 2021 and when he was selected by the Blues in 2023. They noted his long-standing involvement with the organization since the age of nine.
