“Newfoundland Corrections Head Resigns Amid Financial Probe”

Must Read

The head of corrections in Newfoundland and Labrador has stepped down from the position following the uncovering of financial and administrative discrepancies at Her Majesty’s Penitentiary. The province has initiated an internal inquiry into the financial and administrative procedures at the largest correctional facility in St. John’s.

The Department of Justice and Public Safety informed CBC News on Tuesday that irregularities in financial and administrative matters were identified at Her Majesty’s Penitentiary. The department emphasized the seriousness of such incidents, leading to swift action being taken.

Dan Chafe, who has been the Superintendent of Prisons in the province since 2020, overseeing multiple correctional facilities, is no longer in his role. Susan Green, the former provincial manager of institutional programs, has taken on the position of acting Superintendent of Prisons starting August 12.

The department has enlisted the Office of the Comptroller General to aid in the review process and is awaiting the findings. Additionally, the Office of the Auditor General has been informed of the situation. While potential fraud has been flagged, it is yet to be determined if a formal investigation will be conducted by the auditor general.

Chafe did not provide an immediate response to CBC News’ request for comment via his official email address.
