There are no current intentions to change the ownership structure or sell the Professional Women’s Hockey League (PWHL). Stan Kasten, a member of the league’s advisory board, confirmed that the governance of the 12-team league would remain unchanged, despite recent developments involving co-founder Mark Walter. Walter, a prominent figure with investments in various sports teams, including the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Los Angeles Lakers, is currently facing federal investigations related to loans made by his insurance companies.
Kasten emphasized that there were no anticipated alterations in the ownership of the PWHL and that the league remains committed to its long-term sustainability goals. Walter, a billionaire based in Chicago, has been involved in high-profile sports transactions, including the recent sale of the Los Angeles Lakers for a record-breaking price. While his businesses are under scrutiny by U.S. authorities for potential tax fraud, Walter is cooperating with the investigations.
The PWHL, which has subsidiaries in Toronto and Vancouver, welcomed outside investors from Kilmer Sports Ventures and Ilitch Sports and Entertainment earlier this year. The league, founded by Walter and his wife in 2022, has seen significant growth, with plans to expand to new cities. Kasten expressed optimism about the league’s future and highlighted the progress made in just three seasons.
Regarding the ongoing investigations, the Canadian Securities Administrators indicated that inquiries should be directed to regional securities commissions. Despite the external scrutiny, the PWHL leadership remains focused on advancing the league and providing an exciting experience for fans. Walter’s involvement in the PWHL dates back to its inception, reflecting his commitment to women’s hockey and sports development.
