“Toronto Man Sentenced to 22 Years for Double Murder”

Must Read

A man from Toronto has been sentenced to 22 years in prison before he can be considered for parole after being found guilty of two counts of second-degree murder for the fatal shootings of two young women at a house party in Fort Erie, Ontario.

During the sentencing hearing presided over by Superior Court Justice James Ramsay in Welland, it was highlighted that the convicted individual, known as rapper Christopher Lucas or El Plaga, had a history of violence and firearms-related convictions. The murders of Christine Crooks, 18, from Toronto, and Juliana Pannunzio, 20, from Windsor, occurred at a birthday celebration at a rental property on the Niagara Parkway in Fort Erie on January 19, 2021.

Lucas was convicted by a jury earlier in the year. At the sentencing, family members shared victim impact statements, expressing their profound sorrow over the loss of their loved ones. The court was informed that witness cooperation with the police investigation was hindered as 13 party attendees committed perjury to shield Lucas.

According to court proceedings, an altercation between Lucas and Crooks, with whom he was in a relationship, led to the initial shooting where Crooks was injured in the hand. Subsequently, Lucas fired additional shots at Crooks and then turned his weapon on Pannunzio, who was unknown to most present at the gathering, and fatally shot her in what was described as an “execution-style” killing.

Justice Ramsay remarked on Lucas’s “chilling indifference to life,” emphasizing the cold and calculated nature of Pannunzio’s murder. Lucas, who immigrated to Canada from the Democratic Republic of Congo at a young age, had a troubled upbringing in an area plagued by gang activity, losing three friends to violence and being shot himself.

Lucas’s criminal record of violence and firearms offenses dates back to his teenage years, with ongoing involvement in such activities as an adult. While second-degree murder carries an automatic life sentence in Canada, the parole eligibility period is determined by judges, ranging from 10 to 25 years. Prosecutors advocated for a 25-year parole ineligibility period, highlighting community concerns over gun violence.

Family members of the victims shared their enduring grief and pain in court, with Juliana’s stepmother Shellie Pannunzio expressing the profound impact of the tragedy on their lives. Juliana’s father, Mark Pannunzio, lamented the loss of his daughter and the emotional toll it has taken on their family. The victim’s brother, Gabriel, and biological mother, Lisa Mulcaster, also conveyed their heartbreak and struggles in coping with the loss.

Despite being given the opportunity to address the court during sentencing, Lucas chose not to speak and displayed no emotional reaction as he was escorted from the courtroom. The harrowing impact of the double murder on the victims’ families was palpable throughout the proceedings, underscoring the lasting devastation caused by the tragic events.
