A man, Dan Godley, aged 32, discovered he had pancreatic cancer similar to R&B artist D’Angelo after experiencing tightness in his abdomen. Following his diagnosis of stage three pancreatic cancer, Dan underwent Folfirinox chemotherapy promptly. However, scans unveiled that the tumor was entwined around a crucial artery.
Subsequently, Dan was scheduled for a rare treatment known as Irreversible Electroporation, utilizing an electric current to eliminate the cancerous cells. During the procedure, doctors opted for a total pancreatectomy, removing his pancreas, gallbladder, and common bile duct. In a groundbreaking surgery in July 2022, Dan was declared cancer-free.
In a tragic turn of events, D’Angelo, the Grammy-winning artist, succumbed to pancreatic cancer, as announced by his family recently. Dan believes that D’Angelo’s public battle with cancer will raise awareness about the disease among millions of individuals.
Reflecting on his own experience, Dan, residing in Forest Hill, South East London, emphasized the importance of early detection. He stressed that awareness, whether from a celebrity like D’Angelo or an ordinary person like himself, plays a crucial role in combating the disease. Despite his initial prognosis of having only 12 to 18 months left, Dan proposed to his girlfriend Anna, 30, moments after learning about his diagnosis in November 2021.
Pancreatic cancer ranks as the fifth leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the UK, claiming around 9,000 lives annually. While the disease primarily affects individuals over 75, it is rare in those under 40. Despite being diagnosed at the age of 28, Dan was initially informed by doctors that treatment options were limited.
Following his surgery in July 2022, which rendered him cancer-free, Dan underwent chemotherapy until February of the following year. He has since tied the knot with Anna and embraced a healthier lifestyle, engaging in cycling and gym workouts regularly. Dan expressed his astonishment at the successful surgery, highlighting the surreal experience of waking up post-operation to the news of the tumor’s complete removal.
