“Colombian Serial Killer ‘La Bestia’ Dies at 66”

Must Read

Over the years, history has witnessed some truly heinous individuals, including notorious serial killers. Among them, one stands out for his extreme cruelty, being labeled as one of the most despicable murderers in history.

Luis Alfredo Garavito, also known as “La Bestia” or “The Beast,” passed away on October 12, 2023, at the age of 66. Despite his death, the horrifying legacy he left behind continues to haunt those who remember the reign of terror he imposed.

Garavito, a pedophile, operated in secrecy by masquerading as a street vendor, charity worker, or even a priest. He would prey on children, subjecting them to torture, mutilation, and sexual abuse before callously ending their lives, surpassing any previous levels of brutality seen in the country.

Born in 1957 in the Colombian department of Quindío, Garavito grew up in a troubled family environment with an abusive father. He was also a victim of torture and rape by a neighbor who was a family acquaintance.

Displaying disturbing behavior from a young age, Garavito’s actions escalated over time. By the early 1980s, he was committing increasingly violent assaults against vulnerable individuals he targeted.

In revelations to Semana, Garavito confessed to his gruesome acts, admitting to deriving pleasure from inflicting harm on minors. Survivors recounted chilling moments where Garavito identified himself as a sadist during his brutal attacks.

Despite occasional feelings of remorse and seeking solace in the Bible, Garavito continued his atrocities, victimizing around 200 children between 1980 and 1992. He meticulously documented his victims’ names, kept photos, and macabre trophies without raising suspicions due to his seemingly respectable facade. However, the spree of killings commenced in 1992.

Traversing 11 departments across Colombia, Garavito preyed on children from impoverished backgrounds, enticing them with promises of money and gifts before subjecting them to savage abuse and murder. His methods included biting his victims, with reports suggesting he even removed a tooth to enhance the infliction of bite marks.

The discovery of 114 children’s bodies across 59 Colombian towns from 1994 onwards shocked the nation. Initially mistaken for the work of a Satanic cult, investigators eventually realized the magnitude of a single, bold killer who had evaded capture for too long.

Authorities, while investigating the mysterious disappearances in Pereira, Armenia, and Tunja, discerned patterns that led to Garavito’s identification. His arrest in April 1999 on an attempted rape charge unveiled his dark past, with Garavito eventually confessing to the murders of over 190 children.

During a court hearing in the same year, Garavito issued a haunting apology to the victims’ families, acknowledging his crimes and expressing remorse. The true extent of his atrocities remains unknown, with fears that many more impoverished children may have fallen victim to him, their fates forever concealed by Garavito’s silence in death.
