A shooting incident on the Greek island of Crete resulted in the deaths of two individuals and left at least six others wounded on Saturday.
Authorities reported that the confrontation, ignited by a long-standing family feud in the village of Vorizia, began around 11am. Vorizia is situated 32 miles south of Heraklion, the island’s main city.
Police confirmed that a 39-year-old man and a 56-year-old woman lost their lives during the shooting. Emergency services EKAB stated that six other individuals sustained injuries of varying degrees and were swiftly taken to local medical facilities.
Law enforcement mentioned that two injured men are currently hospitalized and are being monitored closely as part of the investigation into their involvement in the armed conflict.
Following the gunfight, security forces and emergency response teams swiftly mobilized to the small mountain village where the incident occurred, and authorities have initiated a preliminary inquiry.
Local media sources indicated that the incident is the latest development in an ongoing feud between two local families, preceded by an explosion at a construction site on the previous night. Fortunately, no injuries were reported in that incident.
According to reports from Greek broadcaster ERT, the two families had previously clashed over grazing lands, which had been resolved through private mediation, a customary practice in rural Crete. Tensions reignited when a member of one family acquired land to construct a house in an area historically controlled by the other family.
The house that was the scene of the explosion had allegedly been built on this disputed plot.
