An elderly woman, Suzanne Rees, tragically passed away alone on a remote island after being unintentionally left behind by a cruise ship. Suzanne, 80, was part of a 60-night Coral Expeditions cruise exploring scenic Australian locations. Following a group hike on Lizard Island, Suzanne fell ill and was left unattended on the mountain as the cruise ship departed for its next destination.
The incident occurred during the Coral Adventurer’s Australian voyage, costing £40,000 per person. Suzanne’s daughter, Katherine, expressed shock and sadness over her mother’s abandonment, citing a lack of care and common sense. The discovery of Suzanne’s absence was delayed until she missed dinner, approximately five hours after she went missing.
Witnesses onboard a nearby yacht reported hearing emergency radio transmissions from the departing cruise ship. The search for Suzanne commenced at midnight and concluded at 3 am, with her body found the next day near a hiking trail on the island. Queensland Police are investigating the non-suspicious death of the missing woman.
Coral Expeditions’ CEO, Mark Fifiel, extended condolences to the Rees family and pledged cooperation with investigations. The Australian Maritime Safety Authority is also looking into the incident. Suzanne, remembered as an avid bushwalker and gardener, will be subject to a comprehensive inquiry to determine the circumstances surrounding her abandonment.
