“Psychologist Warns Against Sole Reliance on Xanax”

Must Read

If you are dealing with anxiety or sleep issues, your doctor might suggest prescribing lorazepam or alprazolam (also known as Xanax). These medications, part of the benzodiazepine family, target gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), a chemical that induces calming effects in the body.

While both drugs are commonly used for anxiety treatment, alprazolam can also help manage seizures from epilepsy. Despite their effectiveness in alleviating anxiety symptoms and other issues, a clinical psychologist cautions against sole reliance on these medications.

Fernando Azor, a psychologist active on social media platforms like TikTok, emphasizes that benzodiazepines can ease anxiety symptoms but do not address the root causes. He highlights that physical symptoms of anxiety are not necessarily harmful and may not always require immediate clinical intervention.

In a recent video, Fernando expressed, “When using Lorazepam or Alprazolam for an anxiety attack, it’s essential to understand the underlying causes of anxiety and how to manage them alongside the medication. These drugs have a significant impact on reducing alertness, worry, and distress levels.”

He further explains that individuals experiencing anxiety crises should develop coping mechanisms to address the underlying issues, particularly during an anxiety attack. Additionally, guidance from the NHS suggests combining medicinal treatment with talking therapies like cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) for generalized anxiety disorder (GAD).

Fernando points out the risk of overreliance on quick-acting drugs like Alprazolam, which may suppress symptoms temporarily but hinder the development of coping strategies for anxiety. Through psychotherapy, individuals can learn skills to manage anxiety symptoms without solely relying on medication.

If you exhibit untreated anxiety symptoms such as sleep disturbances, emotional regulation challenges, or prolonged anxiety for at least six months, it is advisable to consult your GP. The NHS offers various treatments for anxiety disorders, including therapeutic options.
