In a disturbing incident on the French holiday island of Saint Pierre d´Oléron, a man allegedly crashed his car into a group of pedestrians and cyclists, attempting to set his vehicle on fire. The attack left at least 10 people injured, with two in critical condition.

The 35-year-old suspect was arrested by the police shortly after the incident. During the arrest, he reportedly shouted “Allahu Akbar” and had to be subdued with a Taser due to resistance.

Following the attack, authorities found the suspect trying to ignite his car. He was swiftly taken into custody by the police and transported to the Saint-Pierre-d’Oléron police station. Gas canisters were discovered in the vehicle, which partially caught fire.

The arrested individual resided in a village close to the attack site and had a known history of misconduct, according to Mayor Christophe Sueur. Police have initiated an attempted murder investigation in response to the assault.

French Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez provided initial details of the incident, confirming that several pedestrians and cyclists were struck by the motorist. Two victims are in critical condition, with three others sustaining injuries. The suspect is under gendarme custody, and an investigation has been launched.

Public prosecutor Arnaud Laraize revealed that the suspect had substance abuse issues and psychiatric problems. While witnesses reported hearing the suspect uttering “Allahu Akbar,” authorities clarified that the incident is not being treated as a terrorist act.

A local resident described the terrifying moment when the car hit pedestrians, emphasizing the chaos and injuries caused by the reckless driver in Saint Pierre d’Oléron.

Ile d’Oléron, a popular holiday destination in France, attracts tourists from the UK due to its size and scenic beauty. Despite the alarming incident, the island remains a favored spot for vacationers.
