In just half a year, the UK will undergo a significant upgrade to its communications network, marking one of the most substantial changes in decades. With the impending switch scheduled for January 2027, the country’s traditional copper phone system will be replaced by a new technology called Digital Voice. Despite the six-month deadline, the transition is rapidly progressing. BT’s Openreach, the operator of the UK’s largest broadband network, has issued “stop sell” notices at an additional 112 telephone exchanges. This action prohibits broadband providers, including BT, Sky, Vodafone, and Plusnet, from selling or transferring customers to older copper-based broadband and phone services in those regions.
The implementation of “Stop Sell” occurs when a substantial majority (75%) of premises in an exchange area can access ultrafast Full Fibre. Customers seeking to switch or upgrade their broadband or phone services will now be required to adopt a new digital service over the Full Fibre network.
The recent expansion brings the total number of exchanges under Stop Sell regulations to 1,572, encompassing approximately 15.4 million residences and businesses nationwide. While the transition to full fibre and Digital Voice may seem daunting, it promises enhanced benefits such as faster internet speeds, more dependable connections, and a contemporary phone service tailored for today’s digital landscape.
