“NHS Warns Glasses Wearers: Beware of Astigmatism Risks”

Must Read

The National Health Service (NHS) in the UK has issued a caution to individuals who depend on glasses or contact lenses, highlighting the potential risk of two common eye conditions that they may not be familiar with. One of these conditions is astigmatism, a visual issue characterized by blurry vision. People who regularly wear glasses or contact lenses are more prone to developing astigmatism. Additionally, individuals with this condition may also be at risk of another related eye condition.

To increase awareness, the NHS explained that astigmatism causes the eye to be shaped more like a rugby ball than a football. Common symptoms of astigmatism include blurred vision, headaches, and eye strain, especially noticeable after prolonged periods of focus, such as when using a computer. The irregular shape of the eye in astigmatism leads to light focusing at multiple points within the eye.

While not all cases of astigmatism require treatment, healthcare professionals recommend various options such as glasses, contact lenses, and in some cases, laser surgery. However, it’s important to note that these solutions may not be suitable for everyone and each has its own advantages and disadvantages.

Astigmatism often coexists with nearsightedness or farsightedness. In some instances where only one eye is affected, it can lead to a condition known as a lazy eye, which occurs when vision development is impaired. The NHS advises individuals experiencing symptoms of astigmatism or those who have not had an eye examination in two years to schedule an appointment with an optician for evaluation.

Furthermore, astigmatism can be associated with a condition called keratoconus, underscoring the importance of regular eye examinations. Keratoconus involves the weakening and thinning of the cornea, leading to its irregular conical shape, which hampers proper vision focus.

In the early stages of keratoconus, treatment options like glasses or contact lenses may be recommended by optometrists. However, as the condition progresses, referral to a corneal specialist for advanced treatment based on severity may be necessary.

Eligibility for a free NHS sight test is granted to individuals meeting specific criteria, including those receiving certain benefits or under the age of 20 and dependent on someone receiving qualifying support. Additionally, individuals named on an NHS certificate for partial health cost assistance may also receive support for a private sight test.
