“Cold Weather Payments Initiated for 250 Postcode Regions”

Must Read

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has activated Cold Weather Payments in nearly 250 postcode regions across England and Wales today. This move follows a series of winter weather alerts issued by the Met Office for the upcoming week. Approximately half a million households are set to benefit from the payments, receiving £25 each to assist with heating costs.

These payments have been initiated in 246 postcode areas including Greater Manchester, Cumbria, Staffordshire, Gloucestershire, and portions of Wales and Northern Ireland. The complete list of postcodes eligible for the payments can be viewed on an interactive map provided.

Cold Weather Payments are disbursed to individuals in England and Wales who are recipients of various benefits. A separate program is in place in Northern Ireland, while in Scotland, support for heating expenses is distributed annually rather than in response to cold weather spells.

This winter, £25 payments have been triggered in 697 postcode areas, with 18 districts receiving two payments due to prolonged cold conditions. The latest round of payments is expected to reach an estimated 532,000 households, with around 336,000 in Greater Manchester alone. The total expenditure for today’s Cold Weather Payments is projected to be £13.3 million.

In England and Wales, a payment is activated when an area is forecasted to experience temperatures below zero for seven consecutive days. Meteorologists anticipate a period of cold weather leading into the New Year, with subzero temperatures predicted across many regions.

Approximately 3.9 million people qualify for Cold Weather Payments under the DWP’s scheme, including 1.2 million who receive Pensions Credit. Eligibility for these payments extends to individuals claiming benefits such as Pension Credit, Income Support, JSA, ESA, Universal Credit, and Support for Mortgage Interest.

Not all beneficiaries of these benefits automatically receive Cold Weather Payments. Various criteria determine eligibility, with detailed information available on the GOV.UK website. The £25 payments are directly deposited into recipients’ bank accounts within 14 working days, bearing a payment reference inclusive of the customer’s National Insurance number followed by ‘DWP CWP.’

The triggering of Cold Weather Payments is linked to specific weather stations, with estimated eligible households listed for each station. In Northern Ireland, the Katesbridge weather station is responsible for the activation of payments.
