Zipcar to End UK Operations by Year’s End

Must Read

Zipcar, a car rental company, has revealed its intention to cease operations in the UK by the year’s end. The UK general manager, James Taylor, informed customers via email about the ongoing consultations and the temporary suspension of bookings past December 31. Taylor stated that the company has initiated formal discussions with its UK employees regarding the proposal to halt UK operations.

Customers who have reserved a car for Christmas will still be able to proceed with their bookings. However, those who have booked a vehicle for the New Year will be contacted by the company. Refunds will be issued to members with reservations after December 31, and the cancellation fee will be waived.

Zipcar has not disclosed the reason behind the sudden decision to close its UK operations. The company’s American operations will continue as usual, with no plans to shut down any operations in the United States. It should be noted that individuals wanting to use Zipcar in the US must have a US membership.

According to the company’s latest filed accounts, the UK branch had 71 employees at the close of the previous year. Financial records indicated that Zipcar experienced deepening losses of £5.7 million in 2024 due to a decline in customer trips.

In its published accounts from October, Zipcar cited increased cost pressures throughout the year, including rising electricity and insurance costs, as well as a volatile market affecting residual values. The company highlighted a significant loss before tax for 2024 compared to the previous year, primarily attributed to a revenue decline resulting from fewer trips and shorter durations. These challenges were linked to the ongoing cost-of-living crisis, impacting discretionary spending demand.

Zipcar offers hourly and extended rentals for cars and vans through a mobile app, with three membership options available: a basic plan with no monthly fee, a smart plan priced at £6 per month, and a plus plan costing £15 per month.
