University of Waterloo PhD student Kaveeshan Thurairajah, though not a Nobel laureate, proudly holds an Ig Nobel Prize. The Ig Nobels, a whimsical take on the prestigious Nobel Prizes, honor unconventional and creative research in academia.
Thurairajah and his team clinched this year’s Ig Nobel Physics Prize for their work on developing a urinal that prevents splashing. Recalling the moment his supervisor, fluid physicist Zhao Pan, shared the news, Thurairajah expressed his elation at the recognition.
The team experimented with various urinal prototypes, such as the Nautilus and Cornocopia designs, to achieve a splash-free and easy-to-clean solution. Thurairajah highlighted the Nautilus as the preferred design due to its reduced splash and cleaning efficiency.
Attending the awards ceremony in Zurich, Thurairajah and his team were dressed in bright yellow raincoats, ready to receive accolades. Despite the humorous nature of their research, Thurairajah emphasized its practical significance in improving public restroom facilities.
In addition to Thurairajah’s team, Canadian researchers from the University of Toronto and McGill University were also honored at the event for their studies on unethical behavior and innovative mosquito proboscis applications, respectively. The ceremony, hosted by the Annals of Improbable Research, relocated to Europe this year after decades in the United States to facilitate international participation.
Thurairajah emphasized the importance of global collaboration in the scientific community and expressed gratitude for the inclusive shift of the awards to Europe.
