Discovering Climate Solutions in Vancouver:
Yunfei Li, a UBC PhD student, leads guided walking tours in downtown Vancouver, showcasing green infrastructure. She explains the transformation of Robson Square into a pedestrian plaza during the 2010 Winter Olympics and the subsequent shift towards sustainable urban design. Li’s tours aim to turn climate discussions into positive, interactive experiences, sparking conversations and optimism.
Li’s tours, part of her UBC research, aim to gauge participants’ emotional and attitudinal shifts towards climate change. Through in-person and virtual experiences, locals and tourists alike gain deeper insights into Vancouver’s green infrastructure, fostering a sense of community and environmental awareness.
One tour stop highlights permeable bricks on Richards Street, showcasing an underground rainwater trench system that diverts millions of liters of rainwater annually. Participants, like Alex Guanzon, appreciate the functional and aesthetically pleasing design that blends seamlessly into the urban landscape.
Promoting Systemic Change:
Li emphasizes the importance of systemic transitions in achieving a low-carbon future. By showcasing existing climate actions and hidden sustainable solutions, she seeks to empower individuals to drive meaningful change and hope for a better future.
As Li compiles survey data this fall, she plans to resume tours next summer, continuing to inspire and educate participants about sustainable urban practices.
