An 11-year-old fossil enthusiast, Anderson Taylor, has turned his passion into a unique venture by establishing his own museum in Cambridge, Ill. Taylor’s museum, named the Cambridge Natural History Museum, proudly showcases his extensive fossil collection, with a Guinness World Record plaque certifying him as the youngest male museum curator.
Taylor’s fascination with paleontology began at the age of three when he discovered a crinoid fossil in his yard, sparking his lifelong interest in dinosaurs and fossils. Over the years, his collection expanded through family trips, gifts, and discoveries made with friends. As his collection grew, Taylor’s mom suggested he open a museum, leading to the eventual establishment of his museum dedicated to fossils and natural history.
With community support and donations, Taylor’s museum has become a popular attraction in Cambridge, drawing visitors from near and far. The museum houses a diverse array of artifacts, including Native American items, gemstones, minerals, fossils, taxidermy animals, and insects. Taylor’s favorite exhibit is a mastodon femur donated by his mom’s former science teacher, highlighting the museum’s diverse offerings.
Beyond showcasing his collection, Taylor sees the museum as a way to educate and engage the community about ancient life and dinosaurs. He actively gives tours, presents to school groups, and plans to expand the museum to accommodate his growing collection. Taylor envisions adding an apartment upstairs or potentially relocating to a larger space to accommodate his ambition of acquiring a full dinosaur skeleton for the museum.
Despite his young age, Taylor’s dedication to paleontology and community engagement shines through in his museum, reflecting his passion for sharing the wonders of ancient life with others.
