“UK to Phase Out Copper Landlines for Digital Voice Revolution”

Must Read

The era of traditional copper landlines hanging above UK streets is coming to a close as the country gears up for a nationwide shift to “Digital Voice” services by January 2027. This move signifies the end of the outdated copper-wire phone network.

After the deadline, households will transition to making calls through their broadband connection. This change marks one of the most significant transformations in UK communications in years. To expedite the transition away from aging infrastructure, BT’s Openreach network continues to implement its “Stop Sell” initiative.

Under these regulations, providers like BT, Sky, Plusnet, and TalkTalk are no longer allowed to offer new copper-based broadband and phone services in affected regions. The Stop Sell program has already been rolled out in various parts of the UK, with an additional 238 exchange locations and about 1.69 million premises set to be impacted.

Customers seeking to upgrade, switch, or subscribe to new services will need to switch to full-fibre broadband and digital phone services instead of relying on the old copper network. Openreach clarified that the Stop Sell policy is triggered when a majority (75%) of premises connected to a specific exchange can access ultrafast Full Fibre.

By early June, the Stop Sell rules will be enforced across 1,432 exchanges nationwide, affecting approximately 14.2 million properties. James Lilley, Openreach’s Managed Customer Migrations Director, emphasized that the Stop Sell program is crucial for expediting the country’s transition to a modern full fibre future.

The phasing out of legacy copper-based services where fibre is widely available aims to help customers and providers migrate to faster and more reliable digital infrastructure. This strategic move also reduces the maintenance costs and complexities associated with old and new networks ahead of the imminent shutdown of the legacy copper-based Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) in less than eight months.

Digital Voice, BT’s advanced home phone service, leverages broadband technology to offer modern features like Multi Call, three-way conference calling, and call diversion to any phone number, including mobile phones. The call quality is expected to be significantly better with Digital Voice, requiring a compatible Digital Home phone for optimal performance.

For most households, transitioning to Digital Voice will not alter their phone usage habits. The cost of the new Digital Voice and broadband service is bundled into a single package price, with no additional charge for Digital Voice.
