“UK Broadband Users Face Peak-Time Slowdowns”

Must Read

Millions of broadband users in the UK are familiar with the challenge of online congestion, especially during peak hours when everyone is trying to use the internet simultaneously for streaming, downloading, and video calls. This surge in activity can lead to slower speeds and decreased reliability compared to off-peak hours when fewer people are online.

Comparably, broadband can be likened to a motorway where increased traffic results in slower movement. This explains why many households experience a noticeable decline in performance between 7pm and 11pm. A recent study by Broadband Genie has revealed the UK areas most impacted by this peak-time slowdown, with Wigan (WN1) ranking at the top of the list.

The report indicates that broadband users in Wigan witness a significant drop in average download speeds from 167Mbps during off-peak times to just 75Mbps in the evening, marking a 55% decrease. Other areas heavily affected by evening congestion include Galashiels (TD1), Harrogate (HG1), Exeter (EX1), and Rochester (ME1).

Not all regions in the UK face evening slowdowns, as some areas actually see an improvement in performance during peak hours. Newport emerged as the best-performing location in the study, followed by Oxford, Glasgow, Blackburn, and Cambridge.

Broadband Genie emphasized the similarity between traffic congestion on roads and internet network congestion, highlighting that broadband performance can vary significantly during peak times based on their analysis of 144,509 broadband speed tests. Customers in Wigan experienced the largest drop in speeds during busy hours at 55%.

The study also pointed out regional disparities across the UK, with Scotland leading in overall broadband performance improvement during the evening. Conversely, the South West experienced an average speed decrease of around 15% during peak periods compared to daytime performance.

Broadband experts recommend practical measures for households to enhance their home connection, such as placing the router in an open, central location free from obstructions to improve signal quality. Providers like Virgin Media suggest periodic router reboots to address temporary network issues and optimize connection stability.
