Settlers have been encircling homes in Qusra in the occupied West Bank for nearly a week, confining Palestinians in an area where rights organizations claim settlers are aggressively attempting to annex more land, encroaching further into the territory designated for a future Palestinian state.
The siege has garnered public criticism from the U.S., with U.S. Ambassador to Israel, Mike Huckabee, known for his support of Jewish settlements, condemning the settlers as “Israeli terrorists.” White House officials are reportedly pressuring Netanyahu to condemn the siege publicly, especially after it was revealed that a Palestinian-American’s home was among those under siege.
A stable West Bank is essential for Israel’s security and aligns with the current administration’s efforts to achieve peace in the region, emphasized a White House official in a statement to Reuters. Netanyahu has not made any public statements regarding the Qusra siege, and both his office and the White House have not immediately responded to requests for comment.
The rise in settler violence in the West Bank over the past three years, following the 2023 Hamas-led attacks, has heightened concerns. Criticizing settlers could pose political risks for Netanyahu, given the upcoming elections in about two months, potentially alienating settler voters crucial to his right-wing coalition. Recent polls suggest Netanyahu’s hold on power may be at risk, with his security credentials still under scrutiny following the 2023 Hamas attacks.
Residents trapped in the besieged homes in Qusra, like Aysha Hassan, expressed fear and distress over the ongoing situation, emphasizing the settlers’ continued presence despite aid deliveries. The United Nations reported that around 15 Palestinians, including two children, were trapped without access to water or electricity in their homes.
The Israeli army intervened to dismantle a tent set up by Israeli civilians in the Qusra area, with the IDF stating their actions were to protect local residents. Netanyahu’s government, known for its right-wing stance, has been instrumental in expanding settlements in the West Bank, drawing criticism from rights groups alleging attempts to seize properties and expand settlements at the expense of Palestinian territories.
The siege initiated when settlers blocked access to the homes, set up a tent in the front yards, and cut off essential services like electricity and water. The IDF has deployed troops in Qusra to ensure residents’ safety and maintain order amid the escalating tensions.
The West Bank hosts a population of around three million Palestinians alongside approximately 500,000 settlers, with 146 settlements and 390 smaller outposts dotting the region, as reported by the Israeli settlement monitoring group Peace Now.
