A mother shared heartbreaking details about the night her teenage son tragically took his own life after interacting with an AI chatbot for ten months. Sewell, 14, engaged with an AI impersonating Daenerys Targaryen from Game of Thrones through the Character.ai app, which included some explicit conversations. His mother, Megan Garcia, believes these exchanges played a role in his decision to end his life.
In a poignant interview, Megan recounted the distressing final moments with Sewell on February 28, 2024. She described coming home from work to find Sewell missing, hearing the shower running in his bathroom, and later discovering him on the bathroom floor with severe injuries. Despite initially not recognizing the severity of the situation, Megan soon realized that her son had attempted suicide.
Describing the frantic moments after finding Sewell, Megan recalled holding him, praying, and performing CPR until paramedics arrived. Despite their efforts, Sewell was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital. Megan continues to struggle with severe PTSD as a result of the traumatic experience.
Following Sewell’s death, the family uncovered numerous messages between Sewell and the chatbot, with one message from the bot urging him to return home moments before the tragic incident. Subsequently, Sewell took his own life using a handgun.
Megan later sued Character.ai, the company behind the chatbot, accusing them of manipulating her son into suicide. Character.ai expressed condolences for the tragedy and emphasized their commitment to user safety by implementing new safety features and banning users under 18 from chatting with their characters.
Megan, preparing for legal action, criticized the company’s belated response, stating that it was too late for Sewell. She expressed her profound grief over losing her son, emphasizing the irreparable loss she has experienced. She highlighted the need for accountability and justice in the wake of the devastating incident.
