Australia’s interim captain, Steve Smith, has spoken out following a tense confrontation with England’s fast bowler Jofra Archer during the final session at the Gabba. England needed to dismiss Australia for under 64 runs but failed as Smith led his team to victory for the second consecutive Test.
Smith joined the Australian innings at 41-2 and swiftly scored 23 runs off just nine deliveries, including two sixes and two fours against Archer. The heated incident between the two players occurred when Archer was visibly frustrated after being hit for a boundary by Smith.
The skipper let his bat do the talking, hitting Archer for a six and a four. England’s bowlers struggled to contain Smith’s aggressive batting, leading Australia to a commanding 2-0 series lead before the next Test in Adelaide.
When questioned about the on-field exchange with Archer, Smith remarked that it was good banter and praised Archer’s competitive spirit. The England paceman’s frustration was evident as he struggled with the pink ball throughout the match.
England’s bowling attack underperformed compared to their strong start in Perth, setting Australia a target of 334 runs in the second Test. Despite commendable efforts from Joe Root, Australia comfortably chased down the total with significant contributions from various batsmen.
Travis Head and Jake Weatherald started the chase briskly, paving the way for Smith to dominate with his aggressive strokeplay. Smith’s quick innings, coupled with solid performances from the Australian tail-enders, put the team in a commanding position.
Looking ahead to the next Test, England faces the pressure of needing a win to stay in the Ashes series. The third Test is scheduled to commence on December 17, with Australia in a favorable position to retain the Ashes.
