A Russian airstrike on a warehouse located west of Kyiv has resulted in the highest death toll of the year in the ongoing conflict, with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirming 38 fatalities and four individuals still missing. The warehouse, identified as an ammunition storage facility by Ukrainian officials, experienced significant explosions and fires that spread to nearby homes and structures.
Efforts to extinguish fires and locate and deactivate explosive devices at the site in the village of Myla are ongoing, according to Zelenskyy. He reported that 20 individuals sustained injuries, including two children. Zelenskyy characterized the Myla attack as a tragic event caused by negligence in storing explosives in close proximity to civilian areas. An investigation is underway to determine the circumstances surrounding the presence of ammunition at the site.
In response to Ukraine’s actions, the Russian Defence Ministry has announced preparations for “massive strikes” targeting Ukraine’s energy infrastructure. This decision follows Ukraine’s drone operations against a major retailer known as “Russia’s Amazon” and the country’s oil and gas sector, which Kyiv alleges sustain and directly support Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine.
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov condemned Ukraine’s actions as escalatory and vowed a proportionate response to protect Russia’s civilian economy. Recent months have seen Ukraine launching strikes on Russian retail and energy facilities, resulting in a fuel crisis in one of the world’s top energy-producing nations.
Ukraine’s newly appointed Defence Minister, Yevhen Khmara, discussed plans to address the significant funding gap inherited from his predecessor. Khmara, a former special forces officer who transitioned to a civilian role, emphasized the importance of securing necessary resources to support the war effort, prevent shortages on the battlefield, and ensure soldiers receive essential support.
Additionally, Russian authorities reported downing or neutralizing nearly 500 Ukrainian drones deployed overnight, with unconfirmed reports suggesting drone strikes targeted a key oil refinery in Kirishi, Russia. The situation remains tense, with casualties reported on both sides as the conflict escalates in various regions.
