Balsam fir trees in New Brunswick are displaying a concerning trend of turning red and dying following the severe drought experienced last summer. This situation has sparked worries about the survival of this iconic provincial tree. Prof. Anthony Taylor, a forestry researcher at the University of New Brunswick, has been closely monitoring the situation. He has received reports from woodlot owners and witnessed the devastation firsthand as the vibrant evergreen trees, commonly used for Christmas decorations, gradually change color, dry up, and perish.

According to Taylor, the current scenario aligns with observations from previous hot, dry summers, indicating that warm and dry conditions, like the drought of last year, have detrimental effects on the growth capacity of balsam fir trees. He has extensively studied the impact of climate change on New Brunswick’s forests and noted similar die-offs of balsam fir trees after exceptionally hot and dry summers in 1986 and 2018.

The lack of moisture due to drought conditions forces the trees to halt photosynthesis prematurely, hindering their growth. This disrupts the production of essential energy reserves needed for basic metabolic functions and defense mechanisms, leaving the trees vulnerable to stress factors like insects or pathogens, which can lead to increased mortality rates.

Moreover, balsam fir trees have shallow root systems, making it challenging for them to access water during dry periods, further exacerbating their susceptibility to environmental stressors. Woodlot owner Peter McKeil has witnessed the impact firsthand, noting the gradual reddening of the trees on his property and estimating a loss of around 100 trees. Despite salvaging some of the deceased trees for lumber, McKeil has adjusted his harvesting practices to maximize value from the remaining fir trees before more succumb to the harsh conditions.

McKeil believes that with the escalating effects of climate change, the long-term survival of the species in southern New Brunswick is in jeopardy. He anticipates that adaptation or migration to more favorable climates will be necessary for the species to endure. This sentiment is echoed by Taylor, who views the current situation as a stark indicator of the consequences of climate change on the provincial tree, emphasizing the urgent need for climate action to mitigate further damage.

As the red-hued trees serve as tangible evidence of environmental distress, Taylor hopes that his research will prompt meaningful change and urge society to accelerate efforts to reduce reliance on fossil fuels and curb excessive deforestation. The visible impact on the balsam fir trees underscores the pressing need for proactive measures to address climate change and protect the ecological balance of New Brunswick’s forests.
