In a surprising turn of events, an African spurred tortoise named Molly was discovered wandering at Oak Hammock Marsh in Manitoba’s Interlake, far from her native Sahara desert habitat. The unexpected appearance of Molly, weighing 36 kilograms, left nature interpreter Gillian Malchuk and her colleagues puzzled. Initially dismissing reports of a tortoise sighting as a misidentification of a common snapping turtle, the team embarked on a tortoise hunt upon a sighting logged on the iNaturalist app.
Their search didn’t last long as a visitor alerted them to Molly’s presence in the parking lot. The staff found Molly, who had escaped her family’s yard 20 kilometers away, feasting on cucumbers and flower petals. After providing her with care and attention, they located her owners through a social media post and reunited Molly with her ecstatic “mother” on July 22.
Despite the joyful reunion, the mystery of how Molly traveled such a long distance remains unanswered. Speculations at Oak Hammock suggest that a well-intentioned individual may have relocated Molly to the wetland, unaware of the potential harm to the tortoise in such an environment. The possibility that Molly traversed the 20-kilometer journey on her own intrigues the staff, emphasizing the remarkable resilience and determination of this adventurous tortoise.
