“Rare Find in Arctic: Invasive Plant Species Discovered Near Iqaluit”

Klaus Koehler, a plant enthusiast, made a rare discovery in July while exploring Sylvia Grinnell Territorial Park near Iqaluit. He stumbled upon a plant species uncommon in the Arctic region, raising concerns about potential invasive species moving into Northern environments with the changing climate.

During his walk, Koehler retrieved a brownish plant known as bladderwort from a pond. Despite its inconspicuous appearance to the untrained eye, Koehler recognized the unique plant characteristics.

The bladderwort, a carnivorous plant adorned with small black bladders containing nearly digested flies, is typically found in more southern regions and seldom ventures into the tundra. The last documented sighting of this plant in the area dates back to 2012 when researchers discovered samples of bladderwort near Kimmirut, approximately 120 kilometers southwest of Iqaluit.

A team of scientists conducting expeditions in the Arctic archipelago identified over 30 new plant species across three trips. Koehler speculates that the presence of bladderwort in Iqaluit may signal a shifting climate pattern.

He noted that while the Arctic currently hosts few invasive species due to harsh conditions, the warming climate is fostering a more favorable habitat for plants not traditionally found in the region. This environmental shift is expected to alter the Arctic ecosystem significantly as vegetation expands with longer summers and milder winters.

Concerns about the introduction of non-native species disrupting the native plant balance are shared by Paul Sokoloff, a senior research assistant at Ottawa’s Museum of Nature. Sokoloff, part of the team that discovered bladderwort in 2012, highlighted potential risks associated with increased human activity in the Arctic, such as birds and ships inadvertently transporting plant seeds.

Invasive species, like the Eurasian-originating grass Phragmite, have caused ecological damage in other parts of Canada, posing threats to local flora and fauna. While Koehler’s finding is not expected to have immediate adverse effects, the proliferation of invasive species in the Arctic could impact the delicate ecosystem balance.

A study by scientists from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology in 2025 identified over 2,500 plant species with the capacity to invade Arctic regions, potentially displacing native species. Sokoloff emphasized the ongoing efforts to monitor and understand the implications of climate-induced plant migrations into the Arctic.

Koehler intends to submit a sample of the Iqaluit bladderwort to the Museum of Nature for in-depth analysis, aiming to contribute to the scientific understanding of the plant’s northward expansion.
