Neglected Orcas Found Alive in Abandoned French Marine Park

Must Read

New distressing video footage has surfaced, seemingly depicting the lifeless bodies of two orcas floating in a deteriorating tank. However, the reality behind this grim scene is even more heart-wrenching.

Earlier this year, in anticipation of a new law prohibiting orcas from performing in exhibitions, Marineland of Antibes in France shut its doors to the public. Despite the park appearing deserted, two orcas, Wikie and Keijo, a mother and son pair, have been left neglected for almost a year in bleak conditions.

A recent drone video captured by photojournalist Seph Lawless has brought to light the tragic plight of these magnificent creatures, moving many viewers to tears. Initially presumed dead, the orcas were found alive, residing in the abandoned marine park in France.

The video’s caption revealed a poignant moment where the orcas, seemingly recognizing the presence of the drone, began to perform as if reminiscing about their past shows. This emotional display of the orcas yearning for freedom touched the hearts of those witnessing this encounter.

Despite efforts to relocate most of the park’s 4,000 animals, Wikie, aged 23, and Keijo, aged 11, along with 12 bottlenose dolphins, remain in a precarious situation. Concerns have been raised about their well-being, especially after previous tragic incidents involving Wikie’s family members at the park.

Discussions about relocating Wikie and Keijo to other facilities have faced obstacles, with proposed moves to Tenerife and Japan being rejected. The uncertainty surrounding their future raises fears that time may be running out for these captive orcas.

Environmental advocates have highlighted the deteriorating conditions of the tank where the orcas are housed, expressing concerns about the potential health risks posed to the animals. The ongoing debate about orcas in captivity continues to stir controversy, with advocates emphasizing the need for humane solutions to ensure the well-being of these intelligent marine mammals.

The complex dilemma of the captive orcas underscores the challenges of transitioning them back to the wild and the importance of providing suitable care in a sanctuary setting. As efforts to secure a better future for Wikie and Keijo persist, the fate of these orcas remains uncertain, prompting calls for action to protect their welfare.
