“Metal Bars Save Man’s Life in Moose Collision”

Must Read

Robert Belley credits the metal bars on his truck for saving his life after colliding with a moose near Lanigan in 2024. Despite surviving the accident, Belley continues to struggle with injuries, particularly in his left hand, which has hindered his ability to work in construction and maintain his income level.

Saskatchewan Government Insurance (SGI) is cautioning the public about the increased risk of wildlife collisions during this time of year, as more moose and deer are crossing roads. Approximately 8,800 wildlife-related collisions are reported annually in the province, resulting in an average of 400 injuries and two fatalities over a five-year period.

Belley emphasizes the seriousness of wildlife collisions, urging drivers to exercise caution on highways to prevent accidents that could cause severe harm or even death. Troy Corbett, SGI’s director of traffic safety community engagement, highlights the heightened risk of collisions in the fall, particularly involving deer. He advises drivers to be vigilant, reduce speed, watch for animal signs, and use high beams when necessary to avoid accidents.

SGI recommends specific actions during wildlife encounters, such as steering towards the animal’s original position and being extra cautious during dawn and dusk when visibility is reduced. Bonnie Dell, executive director of the Wildlife Rescue Society of Saskatchewan, stresses the importance of contacting their organization for assistance in rescuing injured animals involved in collisions, such as deer and coyotes.

Bernie Borgmann, owner of Hooker’s Towing and Recovery, shares his experience of responding to wildlife-related incidents, emphasizing the impact of such collisions on both vehicles and animals. He describes the traumatic nature of these accidents and the need for drivers to be aware of the dangers posed by wildlife on roads.

As drivers navigate roads during this period, staying alert and taking preventative measures can help reduce the frequency of wildlife collisions and ensure the safety of both humans and animals.
