“Bitten by Coyote, Camper Finds Peace on Cabot Trail”

Must Read

A camper, who was biking in Cape Breton Highlands National Park recently, described a brief encounter with an aggressive coyote that bit him. Despite this incident, he emphasized that his overall experience on the Cabot Trail was mostly peaceful.

Alex Radu, from Ontario, recounted being at the MacIntosh Brook campsite when the coyote suddenly approached him. He attempted to scare off the animal by making noise and appearing larger, but the coyote persisted, leading him to flee to safety at a nearby building.

Later, Radu discovered bite marks on his leg and his torn pant leg. He sought medical attention the following day, receiving treatment for his minor wounds and a rabies vaccine as a precaution. Parks Canada confirmed the euthanization of a coyote in the same area where Radu was attacked, although it remains uncertain if it was the same animal.

An ecologist from Parks Canada advised that when faced with an aggressive coyote, individuals should maintain eye contact, retreat slowly, and seek refuge in a secure location. The park has temporarily closed certain areas for safety.

Despite the unsettling encounter, Radu expressed appreciation for the natural beauty of the park and the positive moments he had during his visit. Additional safety measures suggested by the ecologist include using bear spray and walking sticks when in coyote-prone areas. Staff continue to monitor the situation to ensure visitor safety amid the fall foliage season.
