A company in Saskatchewan is currently engaged in drilling for hydrogen to demonstrate the feasibility of extracting it from the ground on a large scale rather than producing it from fossil fuels. Max Power Mining, based in Regina, has initiated drilling at the Lawson Complex in southern Saskatchewan to potentially establish the world’s first large-scale commercial natural hydrogen system. The company’s president, Chad Levesque, highlighted the importance of hydrogen as a crucial element in various industries such as ammonia production, petroleum refining, and transitioning to more environmentally friendly energy sources.
Hydrogen serves as a versatile fuel that can be utilized in combustion engines or fuel cells, producing only water vapor as a byproduct and emitting no direct greenhouse gases. This attribute makes hydrogen a promising energy source for sectors like transportation and steelmaking, aiming to reduce emissions. Currently, the majority of hydrogen available for sale is grey hydrogen, produced from fossil fuels without emission reduction measures, resulting in significant carbon dioxide emissions. In contrast, green hydrogen, produced through electrolysis using renewable energy, offers lower emissions but is less cost-competitive compared to grey hydrogen.
The concept of natural hydrogen, also known as white hydrogen, involves extracting hydrogen from underground deposits with relatively low greenhouse gas emissions, utilizing existing extraction techniques and equipment similar to those used for natural gas and helium. However, extracting natural hydrogen requires specific techniques and considerations distinct from traditional oil and gas drilling practices. Natural hydrogen originates from natural processes like the reaction of oxygen with iron-rich rocks or the radioactive decay of uranium and thorium, which split underground water into hydrogen and oxygen.
Despite the potential advantages of natural hydrogen, challenges remain, including the difficulty in extracting hydrogen deposits that are dissolved in water. While projects like the Lawson Complex hold promise, the exact quantity of extractable hydrogen and its commercial viability are yet to be determined. The ongoing exploration for natural hydrogen globally, including in regions like Saskatchewan, northern Ontario, Quebec, and Nova Scotia, suggests growing interest in this emerging energy source. However, the scalability and impact of white hydrogen on decarbonization efforts require further investigation and development, emphasizing the need for continued research in this area.
