Liberal MP Shaun Chen has announced his resignation, citing ongoing health issues stemming from a car accident at the end of last year. Chen, who has represented Scarborough North since 2015, shared on social media that injuries sustained in the accident have led to significant health challenges, hindering his ability to travel to Ottawa regularly. After careful consideration with his family, Chen has decided to step down from his role as a Member of Parliament.
Prior to his political career, Chen served as the chair of the Toronto District School Board. Prime Minister Mark Carney expressed gratitude for Chen’s dedication to advocating for young people and combating racism, wishing him a speedy recovery and success in his future endeavors.
Chen joins a growing list of MPs resigning this summer, including former Liberal cabinet minister Steven Guilbeault and Conservative MP Cathay Wagantall. Conservative MP Larry Brock also announced plans to step down in mid-September for a position at the Brantford Crown attorney’s office, while NDP MP Alexandre Boulerice intends to vacate his Montreal seat to pursue a provincial run with Québec Solidaire in October.
Chen is scheduled to officially resign on Saturday, marking the end of his parliamentary tenure.
