The case of a man who collapsed on the streets of Amsterdam three years ago has sparked speculation that he could be a long-missing Canadian. Referred to as “Lucky,” the man suffered a medical incident believed to be a stroke or brain hemorrhage on May 10, 2023, resulting in aphasia, a language impairment.
Despite efforts by authorities, Lucky had no identification, used various aliases, and left minimal official or digital traces. The investigation, now under the jurisdiction of a cold case unit, recently garnered a surge of tips, several of which suggest a link to Canada.
Lucky bears a striking resemblance to John Russell Kenny, a Vancouver resident who disappeared over 30 years ago. Kenny, now 67, had a history of mental health challenges and a transient lifestyle. Clues connecting the two men include Kenny’s use of American or Canadian-accented English and various nicknames such as “Chris the Canadian” and Louis.
Collaborating with Vancouver police and Interpol, Dutch authorities are actively examining whether Lucky is indeed Kenny. While a positive identification remains pending, police emphasize the need for caution and thorough investigation to avoid giving false hope to families.
Currently residing in an Amsterdam care facility, Lucky’s ability to communicate is severely limited. While he was involved in a Buddhist community before his health incident, his prior association with Nepal and frequenting of local establishments provide some clues to his past.
