Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre has appointed Alberta MP Dane Lloyd as the party’s referendum lead for Alberta in anticipation of an upcoming vote on separation this autumn. Poilievre unveiled this decision on Sunday and shared a letter addressed to Lloyd outlining the role. Lloyd, who has represented the Parkland constituency since 2017 and hails from Alberta, has a background as a Canadian Armed Forces reservist, which Poilievre believes will equip him with the resilience needed for his new position.
Expressing his campaign for Alberta to remain a province within Canada, Poilievre acknowledged the valid concerns and grievances held by Albertans towards the current situation. He emphasized the importance of listening to Albertans rather than admonishing them, highlighting that what benefits Alberta ultimately benefits the entire country, emphasizing the necessity for more infrastructure, affordable housing, reduced taxes, enhanced security, reinforced borders, and increased liberties to benefit workers and families nationwide.
In response to his appointment, Lloyd expressed his honor in participating in this significant dialogue, underlining his strong belief in a united Canada through a social media post. The CBC News has initiated efforts to secure an interview with Lloyd for further insights into his new role.
Recently, Prime Minister Mark Carney designated Morgan Breitkreutz as the government’s senior adviser on Alberta to oversee the federal response to the upcoming referendum in Alberta and manage major initiatives such as the proposed West Coast pipeline project.
Regarding the appointment, Mitch Sylvestre, who spearheaded the petition for a separation referendum, expressed no surprise at the Conservative Party’s stance for Alberta to remain part of Canada. He commented on the alignment of various parties against separation due to the economic significance of Alberta within the country. Sylvestre highlighted the Conservatives’ vested interest in retaining Alberta within Canada given their significant representation in the province.
Evan Menzies, a former United Conservative Party member now associated with Crestview Strategies, commended Lloyd’s appointment, describing him as an exceptional individual with strong principles dedicated to community service. Menzies emphasized Lloyd’s understanding of Albertans’ frustrations and his ability to engage with disillusioned federalists seeking attention from Ottawa.
However, some analysts caution that Poilievre’s focus on Ottawa’s perceived shortcomings could backfire, potentially fueling separatist sentiments among voters. The referendum scheduled for October will feature ten questions, one of which will address whether Albertans support the province’s continued membership in Confederation or advocate for initiating a legal process for a binding referendum on separation. The remaining queries will center on immigration and constitutional matters, with Albertans set to cast their votes on October 19.
